BOTOX® vs. XEOMIN®
Like BOTOX, the neuromodulator XEOMIN is used to treat the face for fine lines, wrinkles, and folds. We offer both XEOMIN and BOTOX at our Honolulu practice. Though these products are very similar, we want to provide our patients with as many options as possible. As a plastic surgeon in Hawaii, I believe it is important for you to understand their subtle differences, so you can make an informed decision.
What is BOTOX?
BOTOX was the first botulinum toxin FDA-approved to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles develop from muscle motion, including facial expressions like frowning and habitual movements such as squinting. Static wrinkles, on the other hand, are caused by gravity, lack of fat and collagen, and loss of skin elasticity. These types of conditions are instead best treated with dermal fillers.
What is XEOMIN?
XEOMIN is an FDA-approved, highly purified neurotoxin used to treat severe frown lines and other dynamic wrinkles. It uses the same active ingredient as BOTOX; however, XEOMIN contains no additives, just botulinum toxin type A, which can block the release of chemicals that cause certain muscles to contract. These muscle contractions are what cause wrinkles. Additionally, XEOMIN does not require refrigeration, unlike BOTOX.
Candidates for BOTOX & XEOMIN
BOTOX and XEOMIN are safe for all skin types. However, patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any neurological diseases should not receive treatment using these products.
BOTOX & XEOMIN Treatment
During treatment, a fine needle is injected into predetermined areas of the face. Most patients report only minor discomfort, but if needed, we can apply a topical numbing cream or ice to aid in comfort. Treatment for both products lasts about 30 minutes. Patients can schedule their appointments during their lunch breaks or in between errands and return to their normal daily activities immediately after.
BOTOX Results
Patients typically begin to feel the effects of BOTOX within 2 to 3 days, but complete results become apparent after 2 to 3 weeks. The results last anywhere between 3 to 6 months. Check out our gallery of real patient photos to get a better idea of your potential with BOTOX.
XEOMIN Results
The effects XEOMIN treatment are noticeable within 1 to 3 days but develop more gradually than BOTOX. Like BOTOX, the results can last anywhere from 3 to 6 months.
BOTOX & XEOMIN Side Effects
Typically, both injectable treatments do not require any downtime. Patients may experience soreness, redness, swelling, or itching around the injection site, but this will quickly resolve.
