So Many Fillers! Get the Facts
One of the fastest growing facial rejuvenation trends is dermal fillers in Honolulu. These quick, nonsurgical injections can plump the skin, reduce wrinkles, and restore youthful facial contours. With little to no downtime and very minimal side effects, it’s no wonder dermal fillers have become one of the hottest treatments at my cosmetic surgery practice in Honolulu.
But how do you know which filler to choose? Let’s take a closer look at some of the most popular options.
JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC
JUVÉDERM Ultra XC is a smooth gel made of hyaluronic acid. This formula is often used in the nasolabial folds (laugh lines around the mouth), cheeks, and tear troughs. JUVÉDERM Ultra is thinner in consistency than some other dermal fillers, which makes it an excellent choice for more superficial lines and wrinkles. Results usually last 6 to 12 months.
Pros: Natural-looking results, ideal for fine wrinkles or lip enhancement, includes lidocaine for enhanced comfort.
Cons: Not as long-lasting as thicker formulas and not effective for deeper facial folds and creases. More syringes are needed for dramatic results.
JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC
Like JUVÉDERM Ultra, JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus is a hyaluronic acid filler. The formula’s consistency, however, is thicker than JUVÉDERM Ultra. That means it provides more volume to the face and can be used for deeper lines or areas with significant volume loss. It’s also excellent for more dramatic lip enhancement. Results usually last about 1 year or longer.
Pros: Longer lasting than JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC and more volumizing than thinner formulas. Includes lidocaine for enhanced comfort.
Cons: More expensive than JUVÉDERM Ultra, less spreadable, not as long lasting as thicker formulas.
JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC
JUVÉDERM VOLUMA crosslinks both small and large hyaluronic acid molecules. This type of crosslinking is referred to as “VYCROSS™ technology,” and it gives VOLUMA unique characteristics, such as improved longevity and a thick, strong consistency. VOLUMA is ideal for giving the skin an added “lift” and hefty volume boost. Results last up to 2 years.
Pros: Longest-lasting of JUVÉDERM fillers, adds substantial volume and lift, includes lidocaine for enhanced comfort.
Cons: The most expensive of JUVÉDERM’s fillers, not suitable for minor or superficial wrinkles, and not as versatile as thinner formulas.
JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC
JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA also offers VYCROSS technology. However, the consistency is much thinner than JUVÉDERM VOLUMA. This formula is commonly used to treat vertical lip lines (smoker’s lines) around the mouth. Although VOLBELLA is a thinner product, because of the VYCROSS technology, results typically last about 1 year.
Pros: More spreadable than thicker formulas, great for lip lines or under eyes, soft and natural-looking effect, includes lidocaine for enhanced comfort.
Cons: Less dramatic changes, not suitable for deeper lines or wrinkles, more syringes are needed for dramatic results.
JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC
JUVÉDERM VOLLURE is a happy medium between JUVÉDERM VOLUMA and VOLBELLA. It provides a medium-thickness consistency and is recommended for moderate to severe nasolabial folds, also called parentheses lines or laugh lines. VOLLURE can last up to 18 months, making it longer-lasting than many other hyaluronic acid fillers.
Pros: Versatile (can be used for many concerns), lasts up to 18 months, includes lidocaine for enhanced comfort.
Cons: Slightly more expensive than thinner formulas, less substantial lifting effect as JUVÉDERM VOLUMA, not as long-lasting as VOLUMA.
Hyaluronic acid-based fillers like JUVÉDERM have been popular in Honolulu and around the world because they are safe, effective, and easy to perform. At my practice, I often use BOTOX® Cosmetic in combination with dermal fillers for more comprehensive results.
