How Does BOTOX Work?

BOTOX belongs to a class of drugs called neuromodulators which cause the injected muscle to relax. In addition to softening wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions, it’s effective at treating concerns caused by muscle activity, including overactive bladder and migraine headaches. BOTOX is FDA-approved, and its active ingredient has been used in medicine for decades.

BOTOX Before & After Photos

Keep in mind that each patient is unique and your results may vary.

BOTOX For the Upper Face

Safe and reliable, BOTOX is most commonly used to soften crow’s feet, vertical frown lines between the eyebrows, and horizontal furrows of the forehead. Additionally, some evidence has shown that regular use of BOTOX can even prevent the development of these facial lines. BOTOX can also be used to create a gentle, pleasing elevation of the brow.

BOTOX For the Lower Face

BOTOX can enlarge the upper lip and decrease fine lines around the mouth. BOTOX can also be used as an alternative to jaw surgery by reducing the prominence of the masseter muscles, resulting in a slimmer jawline.

Your BOTOX Injection Experience

Dr. Ching administers BOTOX in Honolulu using a very small, fine needle. This ensures your comfort throughout the entire experience. He begins by cleansing your face and marking your skin to help him accurately administer the product. When he makes the injections, he may ask you to make certain facial expressions to help him better visualize the lines you wish to reduce.

The entire appointment is relatively brief—usually under 30 minutes. You can plan to return to your usual daily activities immediately afterward. However, localized side effects can include redness, swelling, tenderness, and itching at the injection sites. These typically resolve on their own within a few days, and visible side effects can be covered with makeup.

Unlike fillers, the results of treatment with BOTOX do not appear instantly. Instead, you can expect to see your results gradually appear within 5 to 7 days as the active ingredient takes effect. Results from BOTOX injections typically last 3 to 4 months, but studies show that, over time, regular treatments will produce longer-lasting results.

BOTOX FAQs

What is the difference between BOTOX and filler?

BOTOX and fillers are both injectable products that reduce the look of wrinkles, so it’s easy to confuse the two. But they work in very different ways. BOTOX relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles, while fillers use various active ingredients (most commonly hyaluronic acid) to add volume and fill in wrinkles from beneath the skin. Fillers can also be used to add shape to the cheeks and fill in other areas of the face.

What happens after my results wears off?

The results of BOTOX don’t last forever, but they can endure for several months. When you begin to see your wrinkles reappearing, you may return to our office for a touch-up treatment. BOTOX has been proven to be safe for long-term use. On the other hand, there’s no rule that says you must have a touch-up. You may choose to leave your skin as-is, undergo treatment with injectable fillers, or even consult for a facelift for an even more significant result.

Can BOTOX be combined with other treatments?

Absolutely. BOTOX is often used in conjunction with fillers to create a comprehensive result that addresses many different areas of the face at once. BOTOX can also be used to improve and prolong the results of facelift and other surgical facial rejuvenation procedures.
